Research before the job interview

Who you know is just as important as what you know in today's job market. Networking really does help you land that perfect job, a job that is just right for you. Networking is a skill you must learn and practice! There are many local  networks. Ask around! Use Google to search for networks.

Research for job seekers

Always learn all you can about the company, the industry, the job / career outlook, trends before that initial job interview. This is very important in a big city and especially when the job market is so competitive for the better jobs. These links provide you with information about companies, industries, and trade publications from Canada. The better your research is the better your job interview will go and the better the job offers you will get!

Interviewers (or on job applications) frequently ask general and open-ended questions about their company and industry, to see if you're worthy. If you don't have a response or it's too general, such as, "Because it's a good company," you're in trouble and likely will be discounted! Interviewers want to know specifically why you want to work for them.

It's mandatory to conduct company research before you interview, so you can answer such questions intelligently. At bare minimum, know what a company's products and services are, why they interest you, and how you can help support them.

Employment works two-ways. Make sure it's a company for which you want to work, and you'll be well-prepared to answer such questions. Find out everything you can about the company, including Benefits,  History, Culture, Advancement opportunities, Financial status, Plans.

Knowing shows an interviewer that you've done your homework and are worthy of further consideration!.

WHY DO RESEARCH BEFORE YOUR JOB INTERVIEW?

1. You will demonstrate your enthusiasm for the career field and the organization.
2. You will be able to show how your skills, knowledge and values match those of the organization and industry.
3. You can determine if this is an organization you would want to work for.

REMEMBER: You can never know "too much" about an organization. Interviewers are always impressed when you show knowledge and ask informed, intelligent questions about the organization and the job.

Before an interview, you MUST educate yourself:

How does this industry work - what do the organizations do, how do they make money.
What skills and personal qualities do successful professionals in this industry share?
What are the important trends in the industry?

When you go for an interview, you should know: the company, its products, its problems, its opportunities and who are its competitors.

Keep this question in mind: As you research,

What are the skills and personality characteristics this job demands and this organization values, and how does your experience and background demonstrate those skills and traits?

You also want to understand the company's culture. It is as important as the Job.
